Q. What are subject terms?

Subject terms are a standardized set of keywords and phrases used to organize a database. Each item in the database, such as article or ebook, is assigned subject terms from the list. You can think of these terms as tags.

More generally, the idea of a standardized list in this context is called a controlled vocabulary.
