Is Cliff Notes considered an academic resource?

Cliff Notes would not be considered academic or scholarly, but it is credible. Cliff Notes plays a similar role as Wikipedia, WikiHow, and others in the pre-research process. These are all places where we may explore a topic we know very little about and are trying to find a research question/problem. These types of resources would not be cited in work.
