How many citations do I need to use in my work?

Is it possible to have too many quotes? Is it possible to use too many sources? Is it possible to have not enough quotations? How do I know if I have enough citations?

Answer

A common practice is at least one in-text citation per paragraph. Why? A standard paragraph of five to seven sentences normally covers one idea. That one idea may be supported by a source. If so, then an in-text citation would be needed in the sentence referencing that source. If a paragraph covers one idea, but references multiple sources, then in-text citations would be needed. Remember that an in-text citation is required each time we paraphrase, summarize, or quote another.

It is possible to have too many in-text citations in your writing. Why? If your writing is full of paraphrases and quotes from others, which both require in-text citations, then you need to ask yourself if your voice and ideas are represented in the writing. Remember that you are being graded - not the authors of your sources!

It is possible to not have enough in-text citations in your writing too. Why? If your writing is only your ideas, you need to double check your prompt. If the prompt is asking for only your ideas, then it is okay to not have any research and the accompanying in-text citations. If the prompt is asking you to comment on a topic or some other action which implies the ideas of others - then you need to include in-text citations in your writing.

Having too many, or not not enough, in-text citations does not always equate to plagiarism. It does mean that you have an opportunity to improve your writing style. Your writing should have a careful balance of your voice and the ideas of others.
