What's active voice?
What's passive voice? What's the difference between active and passive voice?
Answer
In academic writing, you should use an active voice. This is because writing in active voice tells your reader who or what is doing an action. For example, let's look at two sentences below.
- ACTIVE VOICE: The researchers found evidence to support the topic.
- PASSIVE VOICE: Evidence was found to support the topic.
Looking at the example above, we might ask of the PASSIVE example, "Who found the evidence?" Passive voice can contribute to vague or confusing sentences, so writers should avoid it when possible.
