How do I choose my audience for an essay?

Writing always has a purpose. Even if you are writing in a personal journal or private blog, you have an audience of one: you! In addition to your purpose, the audience is another key component in determining what tone to take in your paper or assignment. Your point of view or perspective should match the formality of the assignment.
Your professor will typically be your audience, but you should read your assignment directions carefully. You may be asked to write a memo to your supervisor or to prepare a presentation for a board of directors.
