Can I use "I" and "me" in my post or assignment?

Can I use first person in my writing? Does SWS allow 1st person?

Answer

Most of us speak using the first-person perspective (I, me, my, we, us, and our). This is a casual, conversational tone. Here are examples of first-person:

  • I went to the store.

  • We bought a new car.

  • That's my favorite book.

When it comes to discussions or assignments, there are situations where using first-person perspective is acceptable, such as reflections, opinions, or personal experiences.

If you are unsure about a particular prompt, we encourage you to check with your professor about writing from a first-person perspective.
