When should I use section headings?

How do I decide how many section headings to add?

Answer

Assignments, presentations, and discussion prompts may require section headings. Be sure to review the prompt and ask your instructor to clarify.

Even if the prompt doesn't require it, you may still choose to use section headings. Section headings can help you highlight for your reader when you are moving to the next topic. Headings also give you an opportunity to summarize the key idea of the following paragraph(s) in a few words. It is a common strategy to insert a heading at the start of each answer for a multi-question prompt. Using this strategy means that you can tie each heading to each prompt question when proofreading.
