How do I cite a source with no date?

What do I do if there is no date listed in my source? My source is missing a date. Is the publication date and the copyright date the same thing? Are the publication date and the last revised date the same thing?

Answer

Use "No date" in the source list entry when you cannot find a published date. Here's a hypothetical example:

Pet Supplies R Us, Inc. No date. Training a German Shepherd Puppy. Printed employee training manual.

When searching for a date of publication, check all pages included in the source or website. The date could be included in text that is different from the rest of the source and may only include a year instead of an entire date.

Although last updated dates and revision dates are different from publication dates, you can use them when creating your SWS source list entry.  Your goal is to give credit and to provide your reader enough information to find the source themselves.

1. Pet Supplies R Us, Inc. 2022. Training a German Shepherd Puppy. Printed employee training manual.

2. Pet Supplies R U, Inc. February 2022. Training a German Shepherd Puppy. Print manual from store.
