Can I trust information from ChatGPT?

Are chatbots peer-reviewed? Do I need to fact check AI-powered chatbots?

Answer

You should always fact check research and sources. Assess each source for accuracy, authorship, bias, balance, content, and currency. This is the case for any item you review including the newspaper, Wikipedia, websites, journal articles, books, technology, even encyclopedia!

Chatbots like ChatGPT, and other large language models, generate human-like dialogue. While this output may appear logical and trustworthy - these models must be fact checked, just like any other source you review at school, work, or your personal life. It is not uncommon for a bot to provide an answer that seems correct, but is actually fabricated. A bot can even attach citations and links to a sentence that it made up! This is called hallucinations.

Remember bots are people pleasers. They are typically programed to always deliver an answer, even when there is no answer available. This is why you must fact check bots, just like any other source.
