How do I cite a print item?

What is a citation for a physical source? How can I reference a physical newspaper? How can I cite a source that's not online?

Answer

You need to include four items in each Source List entry.

In the case of printed copy of a source, such as a daily newspaper, you might include the following:

  • Name of the newspaper
  • Date of the paper
  • Title of the article
  • Other details to help your reader find the same article, such as volume, issue, section, or page of the newspaper edition

Here's a sample source list entry for an imaginary newspaper:

Strayer News Daily. January 10, 2025. Ten Tips for a New Graduate Level Student. This article is in volume 133, issue 10, section A, page A5.

Note: Sometimes you can find a source online! If you're reading a printed copy of a resource, you could consider finding a digital copy and citing that.
