Answer

You must include citations when incorporating any source of information. This includes crediting ChatGPT or other AI software. Citations refer to in-text citations and source list entries. 

Below are examples of an in-text citation and source list entry for generative AI, in compliance with SWS guidelines.

In-text citation 

  • When asked, “What is the meaning of life? Explain it in 5 paragraphs,” the generative AI responded that … (1).
  • On December 8, 2022, the author prompted ChatGPT-4 (1) with the following, “What is the meaning of life? Explain it in 5 paragraphs.”

Source list entry

  • ChatGPT-4. December 8, 2022. Response to “What is the meaning of life? Explain it in 5 paragraphs.” https://sharegpt.com/c/oPt72P3
  • ChatGPT-4. December 8, 2022. Response to “What is the meaning of life? Explain it in 5 paragraphs.” Transcript available in Appendix A.
